This volume began as a set of engineering notes — short, illustrated write-ups on the systems and patterns that show up again and again when you build software at scale. Databases, caches, replication, messaging, payments, security, DevOps, big data, and the little details that separate a design from a good design.

Each chapter is intentionally short. Read one on a train, one over coffee, one before a system design interview. The goal is not exhaustive coverage but pattern recognition — to help you see the same shapes recurring across different problem spaces.

Every chapter ends with an “Over to you” question. Sit with it for a minute before flipping the page. That reflection is where most of the learning happens.
